Motorola Xoom™ Tablet Troubleshooting

How do I transfer files to/from my computer?

The information below will provide you with all the information you need to help you transfer files such as music, video and other files from your computer to your Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi™ or vice versa.

Windows XP/Vista
1. Plug the USB cable into your XOOM and then plug the USB cable into the PC.
2. The first time the device is connected to the computer the PC will load the drivers. If you receive any dialogue boxes to install drivers, click yes to continue. (If your device is not being recognized you may need to update your drivers on your PC) Click Here to visit the Motorola Driver Page.
3. Once the drivers have been loaded, the PC will recognize the XOOM device as a portable media player. Click on the My Computer icon. Then click on the Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi™ portable media player.
4. The device storage hard drive will display. Double click on the Device Storage hard drive to view the files and folders stored on the device.
5. You can now copy files and folders between your XOOM and PC.

Windows 7

1. Plug the USB cable into your XOOM and then plug the USB cable into the PC.
2. When you plug in the tablet for the first time, the PC will ask to install drivers, click ok to continue.
3. Once the drivers are installed, the PC will recognize the XOOM device as a portable media player. The Autoplay feature in Windows 7 will present the XOOM device with options. (If your device is not being recognized you may need to update your drivers on your PC) Click Here to visit the Motorola Driver Page. Click Open device to view files.
4. Click on the Device Storage drive to display the folders of the XOOM hard drive.
5. Click on files and Drag & Drop them to the XOOM or PC.

2. From the applications folder click on the Android File Transfer application.
3. Ensure your XOOM is powered up and connect it to the USB cable and then connect to the MAC. The Android File Transfer tool will recognize the XOOM is connected and it will pop up the file folder.
4. You can now Drag & Drop files to and from the XOOM to your Mac.

How do I use the touch screen?
Here are some things to keep in mind regarding your touch screen:
  • Your tablet has a capacitive touch screen which requires your skin to touch the screen. If you are using a screen protector your screen may not work as designed.
  • Changing the sensitivity of the screen is not currently supported.
  • To activate / deactive your screen press the Power Key located on the back of the tablet.
Here are some tips on how to navigate around your Motorola XOOM.

To choose an icon or option, touch it.

Touch & Hold
To open special options, touch and hold an icon or other item.

To scroll through a list or move slowly, drag across the touchscreen.
Tip: When you drag or flick a list, a scroll bar appears on the right. Drag the scroll bar to move the list to a letter A - Z.

Get a closer look at maps or web pages. To zoom in, double-touch (tap twice, quickly) the screen. To zoom out, double touch the screen again. You can also zoom in or out by pinching your fingers together or moving them apart on the screen.

How do I add widgets?

Widgets show you your latest updates, so you don?t have to leave the home screen. Some widgets, like email, let you scroll through items. Other widgets, like books, are stacked and allow you to flick through items.
To add widgets, shortcuts, wallpaper and other customization, touch the plus symbol in the top right hand corner of the screen. Drag the widget, shortcut, or other item to the home screen panel you want.

How do I create shortcuts?

To remove a shortcut or widget touch and hold the item you want to remove and once it is highlighted drag it to the trash can in the top right releasing it when it turns red.
To simply move something, touch and hold the item until you feel a vibration. Then drag the item to the desired location.

How do I "End Task" or kill a running app process?

Touch Apps. Tap and hold the application. An uninstall option with an "i" next to it will appear in the upper right corner. Drop the application over the "i" icon to stop the application.

How do I multitask (switch back and forth) between apps?

This seems more difficult than it really is. Typically, once an app loads, it continues to run in the background until manually closed or until the unit is turned off.
If you want to now use a different app, all one would need to do is tap Home, then tap the shortcut for that app. Once that app is open, to switch back to the first app, you tap Home, then tap the shortcut for that first app. It should pick you up where you last left off.
Another way to easily switch between apps is to press the Recent Apps icon. This will show the last several apps you've used, to which you may choose to switch.

How do I uninstall an app?

To manage & restore apps, from the home screen, touch Apps> Settings> Applications> Manage applications
To uninstall, scroll and touch the application you want to remove. Touch Uninstall.
You can also uninstall an application from the Application Tray. Touch Apps in the upper right corner of the display. Select the application you want to uninstall, and Touch & Hold the application icon. After a few seconds, Uninstall will come up in the top right corner of the display. Drag & Drop the application to the Uninstall trash can.

How do I connect my Xoom to WiFi?

Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi supports WEP, WPA/WPA2 PSK and 802.11a/b/g/n
First, be sure that WiFi is enabled. From the Home Screen, select Apps> Settings> Wireless & networks> Wi-FI and ensure that WiFi is set to On. After a moment, your WiFi networks list should populate. If you need to rescan, tap Menu> then tap Scan.
Scroll to and tap the Wi-Fi network to which you want to connect. If security is enabled, enter the key or wireless password. Tap Connect.
If you need to configure a connection manually, choose Add WiFi Network> enter the Network SSID> tap Save> select security type if any and enter password> and Save.
Once the XOOM has successfully connected to any SSID, it is saved. To delete a saved network simply tap it in the WiFi Settings menu and then tap Forget.
  • Forget and reconnect to the network:

    1. Touch Apps
    2. Touch Settings
    3. Touch Wireless & networks
    4. Touch Wi-Fi Settings
    5. Touch the "network name"
    6. Touch Forget
    7. Attempt to reconnect to the network.
  • Restart your wireless router by unplugging it from the power outlet for about 30 seconds and then plugging it back in.
  • If you are using security, please make sure your password/passkey on both router and device are identical.
  • Make sure your device software is up-to-date:

    1. Touch Apps
    2. Touch Settings
    3. Touch About Tablet
    4. Touch System Updates

    If any update is available, please accept and wait for the installation to complete.
  • Make sure the firmware of your wireless router is up-to-date by checking the manufacturer's website.
  • Enable SSID broadcasting on your wireless router (if it was disabled previously.)
  • Turn off the MAC filtering feature on your wireless router.
  • Be sure that the signal strength is not too weak or not in range, understanding that other radio devices like cordless phones may interfere with the signal quality.

Why is my connection dropping?

If your connection is dropping, check the disconnect policy. You have the ability to control how Wi-Fi stays connected. To adjust these settings:
1. Touch Apps
2. Touch Settings
3. Touch Wireless & networks
4. Touch Wi-Fi Settings
5. Touch Wi-Fi disconnect policy
6. Choose from one of these options:
When Screen turns off

How do I change my WiFi router's SSID?

If your XOOM is not properly detecting your WiFi router and is instead reporting the SSID as "---" or perhaps "-", then you will need to change your router's SSID so that it contains only alpha-numeric characters and no spaces. To do this, you may need to reference your router's manual, or consult with your ISP if they provided you with the router.
First you must determine the IP address of your WiFi router from a Windows PC:
1. Press Windows key + R to open a Run dialog.
2. Type CMD and press Enter
3. At the command prompt in the DOS window, type IPCONFIG /ALL and press Enter.
4. The result should be something like this.

Open your browser and enter your gateway address into the address field. This should take you to your router's configuration page. You likely will be required to log in to your router. Once logged in, you should be able to navigate to the area that allows you to change your SSID so that it contains only alpha-numeric characters and no spaces. This often requires a router restart as well.

How do I set up my Email?

The first time you open Email, you are prompted to set up an email account. After that, you can configure Email to send and receive email from additional accounts. The accounts that you configure are displayed in the Accounts screen.
The Email setup wizard helps you set up your account for many popular email systems, including those based on IMAP and POP3, so you can read and work with the same email as you do on a computer in Thunderbird, Mac Mail, in a web browser, or with another email application. If your service provider requires additional settings, or if your service provider is unknown to Email, you can enter the necessary details manually, though you will typically need to contact your email service provider to determine the right settings for your account.
To add an email account:
1. From the home screen, touch Apps
2. Touch Settings
3. Touch Accounts & Sync> Add account> Email
In the Setup Email screen, enter your email address and password. If you?re adding a second or subsequent email address, you can also check the option to use the new account to send all outgoing messages.
4. Touch Next. Or, if you need to enter email account settings the wizard can?t configure for you, touch Manual setup
If you touch Next, Email attempts to communicate with your email service provider to validate your account for sending and receiving mail, using just your email address and password. This is sufficient for most email services.

Depending on the service provider, you may be asked what kind of email account you have. If you?re not sure, check the settings in the application you use to send and receive email on your computer, or ask your email service provider.

If the wizard determines that your service provider requires additional information, or if you touched Manual setup, you?re prompted to enter your email account details.

The details you enter are different, depending on the email service type. Contact your email service provider for the values required for your account or click here for some common ISP email settings.
5. Enter any other information requested by the type of account you?re adding and touch Done
6. Enter a name for the account and touch Done
Email starts downloading your email messages and you can start using it to send and receive messages using the new account.

How do I remove an Email account?

1. From the home screen, touch Apps
2. Touch Settings
3. Touch Accounts & Sync
4. Touch the account you want to delete
5. Touch Remove account

How can I save battery life?
New batteries are not fully charged. Plug the battery charger into your tablet and an electrical outlet. Your tablet might take several seconds to start charging the battery.
Tips to extend battery life:
  • Select a shorter backlight duration
  • Lower the display brightness
  • Use the AC adapter to charge your device whenever possible
  • Turn Bluetooth off when not in use
  • Turn Wi-Fi off when not in use
  • Certain applications may be drawing excessive battery power. If you are experiencing shorter battery life after downloading an application try uninstalling the application
  • Close any third party applications running in the background
  • Playing music, videos and viewing images will affect your battery life
  • The battery charger shipped with this device is a high rate charger specifically designed for your device. Use only the charger that came with your tablet or the Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi dock to charge your tablet. The USB port is used for data transfer only, NOT for charging.
  • Some Marketplace applications can drain battery unexpectedly with data requests and processes running in the background. Deleting widgets alone for these applications will not stop the application from pulling the data; the application itself must be uninstalled or killed temporarily with a Task Manager or App Killer.
  • If you know you won?t be near a mobile or Wi-Fi network for a while, switch to Airplane mode. Your tablet uses extra power to search for mobile networks.
You can check the battery charge level. Tap Apps> Settings> About tablet> Status. The battery status (charging, discharging) and level (as a percentage of fully charged) are displayed at the top of the screen.
The Battery Use screen lists the applications that have been using the battery, from greatest to least battery use. Tap Apps> Settings> Applications> Battery use.

How do I register the manufacturer's warranty?
Motorola's Limited Warranty for the Motorola Xoom covers your tablet for one year. Warranty service for eligible repairs is available at no charge for twelve months from the date of original retail purchase ("date of purchase").
You do not need to register your warranty. If you visit the Motorola XOOM WI-FI Support Site and follow the steps for submitting a device for repair, you will be prompted with the warranty term for your device after entering the serial number.

What should I do if my Xoom will not turn on?
First, ensure that your XOOM is fully charged before troubleshooting. Connect the power adapter to the XOOM and a working outlet. When the device is powered off and the battery is charging, the charging indicator lights white until 100%, and turns green when it is 100% charged. Let the XOOM charge for at least 20 minutes before trying to power on.
In the unlikely event that your device becomes unresponsive, try a forced reboot: Press and hold both Power/Lock button and the up-volume key for three seconds.

How do I reset my XOOM to factory settings?
Factory Data Reset is a tool used to remove everything that was imported, added or installed on the device.
WARNING: When using this feature; everything is deleted, including Dungeon Defenders and some pre-loaded music. It is STRONGLY recommended that you backup before performing a reset. Click here for information on how to back up your files.
To perform a reset using the settings menu:
1. From the home screen, touch Apps
2. Touch Settings
3. Touch Privacy
4. Touch Factory data reset
5. Check the Erase USB storage box if you would like to erase all content stored.
6. Touch Reset tablet and follow the instructions
To perform a reset using external keys:
NOTE:It is highly recommended you use the above factory reset using the settings. Making a mistake using the factory reset using external key method could have very bad consequences. If you are unable to navigate through the menu to perform a factory data reset, you can follow the steps outlined below.
1. Ensure your tablet is off.
2. Turn on the tablet, while the tablet is showing Motorola logo, press the volume down key.
3. Wait a few seconds and press the volume down key until "Android recovery" shows up in the top left corner
4. Press the volume up key to place the tablet in Android recovery mode
5. While the tablet is showing the Android recovery screen (Android with triangle exclamation), press and hold the power button
6. While the power button is pressed, press and release the volume up key
7. You should be prompted with: wipe data/factory reset option
8. Using the volume down button, scroll down to Wipe data/factory reset
9. Press Power to select option
10. Scroll down to select Yes, delete all user data
11. Use Power to select
12. Press the Power button to reboot
